ITA and CRS Changes: Navigating Residency

Got an ITA but Your CRS Score Changed? How to Navigate for Permanent Residence?

March 11, 20242 min read

For Express Entry candidates, receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence is a significant milestone. However, what happens if your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score changes after you receive an ITA? Here's what you need to know:

Option 1: Decline the ITA

If you experience a material change that negatively impacts your CRS score or eligibility, you have the option to decline the ITA. This is recommended by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) if your circumstances have changed or the information in your profile is no longer accurate. By declining the ITA, you can revise the information in your Express Entry profile and recalculate your CRS score.

Option 2: Proceed with Submitting the Application for Permanent Residence (APR)

If you choose not to decline the ITA, you can still submit your Application for Permanent Residence (APR) to IRCC. However, it's crucial to ensure that any changes in your circumstances are accurately reflected in your application. Whether the change is positive or negative, you must update the information in your APR before submitting it.

Examples of Changes That May Affect Your CRS Score

Obtaining a certificate of qualification

Improved language test scores

Decrease in CRS Score:

Lower language test scores upon retaking the test

Loss of a qualifying offer of arranged employment

Impact of Adding a Spouse or Partner:

Addition of a spouse or common-law partner may increase or decrease the CRS score, depending on their human capital factors.

Important Note:

Applicants are not penalized for changes in their CRS score due to factors like age (e.g., if their birthday occurs after receiving the ITA).

Consequences of Declining an ITA

Declining an ITA returns you to "candidate" status in the Express Entry pool. Your profile remains active as long as it's valid, and you continue to be considered for future ITAs in subsequent Express Entry draws.

Navigating changes in your CRS score after receiving an ITA requires careful consideration. Whether you choose to decline the ITA or proceed with your application, ensuring the accuracy of your information is essential for a successful permanent residence application in Canada.
